Top Ten Ways to Stay Off the Bestseller List

  1. Never start writing, only talk about it
  2. Spend all your time trolling Facebook, Twitter, and other such places.
  3. Wait for inspiration.
  4. Bounce from one story idea to another without choosing one.
  5. Reach a tough place in your book, stop, and start a new story.
  6. Never finish anything you start.
  7. Believe you know it all and there’s nothing to learn.
  8. Defend your book to anyone who tries to help.
  9. Never promote.
  10. Receive one rejection and give up.

  1. I think giving up at any point whatsoever will keep you off the bestseller list. And telling absolutely EVERYONE you meet in the VERY FIRST SECOND that you’ve written a book and it’s a super awesome book and you really need to read and look, you can use your iphone to go online and download it RIGHT NOW.

    Or something like that.

  2. I can honestly say I have not done any of these. Once I started writing four years ago, that’s all I want to do. I thought about giving it up but an hour later I am writing again.HUH

      I’m naturally a shy person, too. But if you believe in what you’ve written, and your purpose in writing was to share with others, then forget about yourself and promote your work. It takes practice. Find yourself some writer friends, hang out with them, and talk about writing. Peers are there to shore you up. Be there for them, and they will be there for you. Practice, practice. You’ll do just fine. –kd
